APRIL 2016
COUNTESTHORPE
AND FOSTON
HERITAGE GROUP
Recent Talks included on 19th February, John Lessells talking about Leicester’s Trams. A very interesting and amusing talk detailing the history of Leicester’s trams from 1874 to 1949. The talk was illustrated with a wonderful selection of slides which were particularly nostalgic as many of them showed buildings and streets in the background which can still be recognised today.
Forthcoming Events (Village Hall)
29 April 2016. Dr John Sutton – The History and Development of the National Census.
LIONS IN THE SKY’S
Blaby Lions held a quiz last year in order to raise funds for the Air Ambulance. Last week they handed over a cheque for £400 at the end of a presentation by John Nowell from the Air Ambulance.
Many members never realised that the air ambulance only started in 1984 and now there are 36 helicopters covering the UK. They can only operate during daylight hours as they never know where they will have to land. In the East Midlands it costs £1.7m to run the operation each year and covers 2100 square miles.
MRS ENA CLARKE
Obituary to Countesthorpe Bowling Club, Life Member Ena Clarke
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of a stalwart lady member of the Club. During her bowling career Ena won the County Singles, England Singles, British Isle Championship which was played in Belfast 1986/1987, and together with other members played in the winning team for the Johns Trophy. Ena passed on her knowledge of bowling to many new players joining the club over the years, and will greatly missed by all those who knew her. We send our sincere condolences to her husband Arthur.
