12 THE NEW COUNTESTHORPE HERALD
DREDGING OF THE
COUNTRY PARK
If you have been for a walk around our country park in the past week, you may have noticed dredging machinery clearing out the ponds. This has been in an attempt to remove as much of an invasive and detrimental species of waterweed as possible.
After an inquiry into what this work has meant for nesting birds in the area, I have been informed that the specialist contractors have left a 5m perimeter around nests (of which none have eggs), and is more than the legal 4m minimum. I’ve been informed that the contractors are very skilled in their work and would not do anything to cause long-term damage to the wildlife of the pond.
If you visit the pond now, water ripples when the wind crosses it - introducing oxygen into the water which promotes a healthy water pH and a better habitat.

BUSY BEAVERS (& CUBS)
Youngsters getting lots of opportunity to get outside and work towards Challenge badges. Beavers and Cubs have enjoyed Chip Shop Walks, while Scouts have been visiting Ullesthorpe Campsite, for pioneering and outdoor games – before finishing the season at Laserforce! Some Scouts are currently working towards their Expedition Challenge, hiking for 2 days in unfamiliar countryside, camping overnight and cooking their evening meal on tranjas. A few of our older Scouts are also planning a camp in late July on a ‘Passport’, where they will camp without the direct supervision of adults for 24 hours – planning all of their programme, meals and equipment.
Beavers had a great day out to Wicksteed Park, going on all of the rides, meeting the animals and of course enjoying a ride on the train. Jack Barber
