26 THE NEW COUNTESTHORPE HERALD
HINCKLEY & DISTRICT
PARKINSONS GROUP
In this column I often mention the various ways that members raise funds which not only go towards essential research into the disease but also help to fund the regular group activities so that members can participate without worrying about the costs involved. It means that all forms of exercise classes are free to the participants despite room hire and professional leader costs.
Pat Booth of Aston Flamville has certainly been busy this summer! Pat and her daughter Michelle Riley-Flinders decided to raise some funds by chosing to walk 100 miles in May. Pat’s husband, Roger, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s just a year ago.The impact on their lives was huge, particularly coming to terms with the physical and psychological changes, but they found the support and friendship from the local Hinckley & District Group so very helpful, getting advice and support from others in a similar position. have referred to this as “a life line” and wanted to find a way of raising funds for the self-funding group to help keep all the activities running.
The sponsorship donations for the 100 mile walk all went directly to the local group. They planned to raise £500 but after completing the 100 miles they had already trebled that amount with donations still coming in!
Then Pat and Roger held a garden party at their home in Aston Flamville, with entertainment and lots of home-made cake. Despite very challenging weather conditions, the support received was tremendous with around £1500 raised. Pat, Roger and Michelle thank everyone who donated and the local group very much appreciated this support and send their thanks to all involved.
All meetings continue throughout August and September. The monthly Hinckley Group meetings continue on the 2nd Sunday of the month at 2.30 on August 11th and September 8th at the Mary Forryan Centre; ‘Let’s Get Active’ Tuesday exercises at 3.00 at the St. Francis Centre; ‘Movement to Music’ and ‘Singing for Fun’ at Elmesthorpe Village Hall on Friday afternoons from 2.30; monthly ‘Drop Ins’ at Dobbies at Stapleton on the third Monday, August 19th and September 16th, from 2.00 in the Restaurant Conservatory; and our Nordic Walking on the third Thursday at 11.00 from Acorns Café at Burbage Common [August 15th , September 19th].
