OCTOBER 2015
THE NEW COUNTESTHORPE HERALD 15
Countesthorpe Methodist Church Notes from Sheila Howell & Angie Skerritt
REMEMBRANCE
This year, as a country, we have commemorated the end of the hostilities of WWII both in Europe and the Far East. We have heard moving accounts of war experiences from those who survived along with touching tributes to their lost comrades.
In Countesthorpe we come together at St Andrew’s for a special Remembrance Service when young and old, proudly wearing their poppies, gather to remember. The first official Legion Poppy Day was held in Britain on 11th November 1921. Since then the Poppy Appeal has been a key annual event in the Nation’s calendar. The appeal was inspired by the WWI poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ - its opening lines refer to the many poppies that were the first flowers to grow in the churned-up earth in Flanders. The poem was written by a Canadian physician, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, on 3rd May 1915 after witnessing, the day before, the death of his friend - a fellow soldier.
We have been considering the possibility of a trip to the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas. Those who have already visited speak so
highly of the way all who played their part, whether at home or abroad, are remembered.
The National Memorial Arboretum
Significantly the main Memorial, upon which the names of the fallen are written, has been built with a gap in one side of the right-hand wall. The inscription reads ‘Through this space a shaft of sunlight falls at the
eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month’. Those who lost their lives in the Berlin Airlift are also remembered.
GARDEN PARTY
Our annual Garden Party was on 5th September at 17 Linden Avenue. We had a good afternoon and the weather stayed fine, but we put up gazebos ‘just in case’.
ANNIVERSARY
Our Chapel Anniversary is on 11th October when our worship will be led by Rev Gordon Webb who was our minister during the 1980s.
GIFT SERVICE
On 15th November our Gift Service, led by Mrs Sheila Howell, will be in support of Water Aid.
CHRISTMAS FAYRE
We know there will be a few comments when we mention Christmas, seemingly so early, but the December Herald is the only one between now and then and our Christmas Fayre is on 28th November, the day before the first Sunday of Advent!!
