which requires three volunteers and up to two hours to complete each time. The club will use this funding to install an automatic watering system to reduce the time and physical toll on the volunteers, improve water efficiency and the overall condition of the green.
Dave Williams; Club Secretary said “This is a major improvement to our facilities, continuing the work we have been doing over the past few years to make our Bowls Club a centre of excellence for the people of Countesthorpe and the surrounding area.”
Keith Riddleston; Greenkeeper, said: “The time and work saved for my team of volunteers is invaluable. The automatic watering system will improve our playing surface immensely, and help make our experienced and novice members even better players.”
Gillian French, Biffa Award Programme Manager, said: “We’re pleased to support this project at the Countesthorpe Bowling Green, so that the volunteers can spend less time on maintenance, and more time on improving their game! This project is an excellent example of how the Landfill Communities Fund can help improve facilities for the community.”
AWARD FOR ANNE
Leicester Animal Aid chairman, Anne Martin was nominated and selected for Blaby District Council’s “Volunteer of the Year” and was successful in achieving the runner up position.
At the awards ceremony held at Leicester’s Marriott Hotel, Anne was presented with a certificate to commemorate her tireless work, dedication and support to all the animals at Leicester Animal Aid.
This award goes some way towards recognizing the unending support that Anne has shown to Leicester Animal Aid over the last 18 years. She manages a team of up to thirty five volunteers, organizes fund raising events, helps out in reception, sorts donated good and with the help of her dedicated team raises in excess of £50,000 per year for the charity. Anne is a friendly, warm and caring individual who the team couldn’t be without and we are delighted that she has been recognized for all her hard work and dedication.
GIRLS JUST WANT TO
HAVE FUN
2015 has been a wonderful year for the W.I. Formed on 16 September 1915 the Centenary Celebrations have included a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, very Royal visitors at the National Annual Meeting and hundreds of special celebrations in September in towns and villages all over the country.
It should be that things calm down now but not so in Countesthorpe. On October 2nd we hosted our Group Meeting which saw six W.I.’s join together to enjoy an evening of magical fun. Roberta Male, a long standing respected member of the W.I. enthralled us all as she shot balloons with a banana! It was a very ‘audience participating’ evening topped off by a play written by our very own play-write, Christine Claricoates.
On the 14th four members visited the Rainbows group and had a wonderful time decorating cakes with the girls. Who knows prospective W.I. members? Two very different activities which prove that, no matter the age, every girl just wants to have fun. Come and join us in the Village
Hall at 7.15pm every second Monday of the month.
Picture above shows the fastest banana North of Watford. Below are the WI ‘Players’ fresh from a play what Christine wrote.
