APRIL 2016 THE NEW COUNTESTHORPE HERALD 27
BIRKETT HOUSE SENIORS @ COUNTESTHORPE COLLEGE
SUPERHEROES
One girl lived in a world so white The problem was she was black On her first school day,
She walked with her mother Words were yelled Paraphernalia was thrown Every day, she prayed
For an equal world
one woman lived in a world still white once again, she was black
she was made to sit at the back of a bus she refused, and was arrested
but she fought without violence
for an equal world
one man grew into a world so white you guessed it: he was black
he protested
got arrested
but let nothing keep him
from an equal world
one man had a dream
he told others his dream didn’t give up on his dream worked hard with his dream this man dreamed
of an equal world
four men sang
in Liverpool, they sang
in new York: they sang
in montreal: they sang
in india: they sang
they sang for purposes such as peace
love
and an equal world
these people are proof that: superheroes don’t need capes they don’t need to fly
the only powers they need are strength
determination
kindness
and we thank them for this now largely equal world

ALL ABOUT ME
by Callum Hearne
Hi, my name is Callum. I’m age 17. I’d like to tell you about autism. It might get a bit upsetting as you read through, so make sure you have tissues at the ready.
Autism means that you look at the world differently than others. You see it in a different perspective. Like going into the supermarket – if there were lots of people I would have to get out. But as I’ve gotten older, that has gone away. It was hard. I didn’t like people shouting, to the point that I would get really angry.
I was 14 when I got diagnosed with something culled PANDAS Autism. I went to doctors and did not know what they were doing, and when my autism would get worse I would instantly think I was going into hospital. If my family had plans, and the plans would change, I would not understand why they would change. I would get annoyed if they
changed. It would affect me.
I have a lot of friends with autism, and it comes in all different ways. They may be non-verbal, and when people are like that they don’t know how to explain themselves. They can get quite rattled. Things they would like to say, they can’t, because it won’t come out.
Then there other sides of autism where people are clever, but if things change it makes people with autism a bit more angry than others. We would get upset quite easily over the smallest things that other people might not even worry about, like getting told off, but to us it would be a big thing.
I hope you really enjoyed my story about autism. Thanks again!
SPORT RELIEF
at Birkett House Seniors:
The Wheelchair Challenge
We pushed and pulled a wheelchair along the Great Central Way for two miles. It was hard work but worth it.
In-School Activities
Some of our students enjoyed Sport Relief Day back at school. We held a dance contest (winners: Aimee and Sughra) and a Bake-Off (winners: Jack ). We made gold medals from clay, paint, and laminated photos. Emma won an award for Best Crafts and Ryan won Sports Personality of the Day.
We’ll be joining students from Countesthorpe Community College for the Sport Relief Mile Run on Friday. Wish us luck!
So far we’ve raised £120.00 and counting for the Sport Relief charity!
We apologise to all Leicester city fans for our prediction in the last Herald that Leicester would be still in the FA Cup. However we did say they would still be top of the Premier League.
We beat Norwich 1-0. We drew with West
