MAUD AND RAYMOND
PART 3
Vernon really liked Maud and he decided to write a letter to her. He posted it on a Monday morning and the next day it dropped through the letterbox at Maud’s home. She was at work and it was her mother who picked the letter up off the mat and saw the London postmark. She desperately wanted to know if the letter was from Vernon and tried steaming the envelope open to no avail. After a lot of toing and froing and telling herself she had her daughter’s interest at heart, she opened the letter.
Vernon wrote that he missed her and hoped that she would be able to come to London again and perhaps stay over as his parents were eager to meet her. Mother was having none of that. She kept the letter in her apron pocket while she thought about what she could do.
One thing was certain, she wasn’t going to let Maud see the letter – she was frightened of losing her to Vernon and moving to London.
She then had the idea that to write to him was the best thing she could do.
She wrote saying that Maud wasn’t happy
visiting London as she found it too noisy. She also had a good job with prospects of promotion here at home and among her many friends there was a young man who often took her to the pictures and local dances.
She finished the letter by asking him to understand Maud’s feelings and if he cared for her at all he would not contact her again.
Before Maud came home from work she ran to the post box down the road and posted the letter........
