JUNE 2016
GROW & SHOW
Do you grow vegetables? Would you like to grow vegetables? Would you like to show your prize carrots, tomatoes or runner beans at a village show? Well growing and showing is the theme for this year’s Countesthorpe Scout Gala. We will have prizes for biggest and best, and I’m sure there will be a prize for the most unusual looking! So whether you are a seasoned gardener or a beginner, get sowing & growing for the show.
We have moved the date to Saturday 17th September 2016, when your crops should be at their best. We will still have the refreshments, stalls & games. We also have our popular raffle, with fantastic prizes kindly donated by our local businesses, such as Leyton Beauty, Glebe Garden Centre, Cores & Pips, Dine India & Barbero. Many thanks to all of you who helped raise money for our young people.
The gala is a great time to try out some of the outdoor activities our Beavers, Cubs & Scout meetings. So put it in your diary and we look forward to seeing you.

INSIGHT INTO BBC
RADIO LEICESTER
Blaby Lions were given a rare opportunity to see the inner workings of the BBC radio station in Leicester. They were given a guided tour of the premises by programme editor Pete Wardman. The new building has some of the old fixtures and features from the 18th century. Of particular interest was the tunnel which went all the way to the Clock Tower. During the visit the group were introduced to the Sports Producer Martin Ballard and his assistant. Martin expanded on how demanding the job can be due to so many successful sports teams in Leicester. The group were then taken to meet the Political Correspondent Tim Parker who again had his hands full. The current hottest topics were the European Union and library closures. Talking to both of them made us realise the amount of work which can go into a 1 minute broadcast. Then there was the visit to the garage to see the outside broadcast vehicle, the new satellite one and the old aerial one, which is now a museum piece. The tour was rounded off with a visit to the live
broadcast studio and its anti-room. The broadcaster at the time was Ady Dayman a well known friend to the Lions club. The group sat through his live broadcast trying not to make a noise or sneeze! After leaving the studio Pete showed the group how the entire programme is now all controlled and edited on the computers. A truly fascinating eye opening trip. Thank you BBC.
The Blaby District Lions club is very active in local charitie’s and works to serve the local community where possible. Anyone interested in being considered as a member should in the first instance contact Lion Roger Smith on 2751567 http://blabylions.org.uk
