NEWS AND VIEWS FROM THE CHURCHES
LICENSED TO SERVE
Our picture shows Chris
Davidson, Helen Stokes,
June Ainge, Gail Mackley
and John Frakes at the
Cathedral on 10th October.
CHRIS was licensed as a
Pioneer Minister to oversee the work with young people aged 11 upwards and the Friday night Drop-In. He aims to ‘engage with young people in the community and make church relevant to them’.
HELEN was licensed as a Reader Minister and will have a major role in leading services along with the clergy. She says, ‘I’ll be exploring creative ways of worshipping and joining the Messy Church team.’
JUNE is already a Reader Minister, but is now also a Pioneer Minister and will work especially to develop St Andrew’s Messy Church. She sees her role as ‘helping Messy Church to experience God’s Love in word and action - what a privilege!’ GAIL was licensed as a Pastoral Assistant, a caring role which she has undertaken for
from Gilbert and Sullivan. John’s finale ‘Nessun Dorma’ drew great applause! The encore ‘Give Me Sunshine’ ensured that we all left with a smile. Countesthorpe truly has talent!
a year already. She says she will aim
Reader Ministry and still every day has its challenges.’
Vicar David Hebblewhite writes:
The Licensing of our new Lay Ministers recognised that we are all called by God to play our part in his whole mission to the world. I am delighted that four people responded with a loud ‘YES’ to God’s invitation to a wonderful adventure and will be sharing in the leadership and ministry at St Andrew’s. Also that one person’s past and continuing ministry was recognised and valued.
CONCERT
On Saturday October 24th St Andrew’s resounded to high quality music in a concert organised by reader minister John Frakes and organist Glenn March. They sang songs from classical operas and shows, interspersed with piano and organ pieces, including Flanders and Swann items. John’s grandchildren, wowed us with their confident performances on flute, violin and piano and in song. Lighter interludes saw the vicar and two parishioners singing ‘Three Little Maids from School’ and ‘A Policeman’s Lot’
JUST TREATS
On Saturday 31st October it was ‘No tricks, just treats’ at St Andrew’s. Once again we hosted this event, on a date which originated as a festival of appeasing evil spirits, aiming to celebrate Jesus bringing light into the world’s darkness. The path to the church was lit up with candles, inside pumpkins carved with smiling faces, hearts and crosses. The free hot dog barbecue was beside the path. Inside the church it resembled the proverbial sardine tin at times - from the raised platform at the east end of the church there was an amazing view of a sea of people occupying every available space! It is always a fun event for children to bring their parents to!
