LEICESTERSHIRE SPEAKERS
REMEMBRANCE
Our meeting opened on 11th November with Margaret Barrett reading three poems which included “Everyone Sang” by Siegfried Sassoon, a poem resonating relief that the horrors would cease and optimism for the future. We all know what happened thirty years later!
Hiten Vyas delivered his speech entitled “BAFTA”. This was a researched speech that contained many interesting facts about BAFTA’s inception and the work this charitable organisation does in promoting the British Film industry. There may be rush on booking cruises on the River Danube next year as a result of a superb speech by Frank Kovacs. A word of caution, it may not be plain sailing, if the river level rises, one may be required to disembark to enable passage under some bridges!
John Baron spoke about the nuclear accident that occurred in October 1957 at Windscale and the obfuscation of politicians attempting a cover up.
The star of the evening was Daniel Cole. Glactosemia was the subject of his speech and he was brilliant! To give a maiden speech on the second visit to the club was remarkable.
Wyn Glen was topics chairman this month. Members were asked to talk on the development of cultural and everyday activities through the ages. This produced some great factual and also amusing speeches.
Leicestershire Speakers welcome anyone who would like to learn the art of speaking in public. Our meetings are supportive, informative and entertaining, helping to turn nervous wrecks into confident, speakers. We meet at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of each month at the Blaby Drop in Centre. For more information ring Anne Jones on 2772295 or visit our website www.leicspeakers. co.uk. We can also provide entertainment and talks to other societies and groups.
DECEMBER 2015
COUTESTHORPE NURSERY SCHOOL
Well, a lot has happened at Countesthorpe Nursery School since the start of the new academic year in September. Having said goodbye to the older children as they made their way to BIG school, the Nursery School welcomed back 23 pupils along with a further 24 new starters. After the first few weeks of settling in, the Nursery School hosted its annual Harvest Celebration. The theme this year was based on The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch by Ronda and David Armitage and the children told their audience of their own favourite sandwiches, which were not filled with mustard by the way, before performing the many Harvest-inspired songs that they’d been busy learning. Also since the beginning of term, the Nursery School has been taking part in the Active Bean project, a Blaby District Council initiative to challenge and encourage young children in being
physically active. This has proved to have a positive effect on the children’s social and communication skills, a fantastic by- product of having fun! During November, the Nursery will take part in Operation Christmas Child, Children in Need and the photographers will visit to take those all-important pictures to include with the family Christmas cards. December begins with a trip to the Winter Wonderland at the Snowdome and then during the final couple of weeks of the term, there will be the well-rehearsed This is my Gift Nativity play, followed by a Christmas party and culminating in a movie day with popcorn! It sounds like its going to be a fun-filled run up to Christmas at Countesthorpe Nursery School.
