AWARD
WELL START BY GETTING THOSE HANDS OUT OF YOUR POCKETS! Countesthorpe (109th) Scouts have a reason to celebrate. Jack Barber has become the first villager to be awarded the Queens Scout Award since 1981. Jack was presented with the award by HRH The Duchess of Gloucester and Chief Scout Bear Grylls at Windsor Castle.
To earn the Queen’s Scout Award youngsters, aged between 16 and 25, need to have completed a range of tasks including an expedition in wild country, spend at least five days undertaking a residential project, as well as helping in their community.
For Jack, this has meant working with Beavers, which he started 7 years ago and he is now a leader. He has also trained to become a FA senior county referee, recently promoted to level six, and has represented Leicestershire at cross country running.
Jacks biggest physical challenge was the 48 mile expedition across the Yorkshire Dales. The hike had to be completed carrying four days’ worth of supplies (17kg) including tent. His most rewarding challenge was volunteering at CHICKS, a charity which provide week long respite breaks for disadvantaged children from across the UK.
It was back in 2003 When Jack first walked in to the Countesthorpe Scout hut and asked the leader if he could join the Cubs. He has never forgotten her reply, ‘Well you can start by getting those hands out of your pockets!’ Sound advice.
