APOLOGETICS DAY CONFERENCE A Reasoned Faith
FEBRUARY 2016
Back in November Countesthorpe Baptist Church had the pleasure of holding our first annual apologetics conference called ‘A Reasoned Faith’. Our main speakers were Mr Richard Lee, founder of ‘East Midlands School of Christian Ministry’, and Mr Derek Marvin, once head of science at Countesthorpe Community College but now teaching the sciences in a school in Coventry.
Richard tackled the reliability of the New Testament scriptures. He spoke of the overwhelming evidence towards their authenticity and credibility, that we can be confident that the Bible translation we
have in our hands today is verified from early fragments and whole manuscripts, some even dating back to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. He also unpacked the historicity of Jesus of Nazareth, the rise of Christianity, the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, showing us not only that the Bible confirms these things, but that later historians, from outside sources, speak of Jesus Christ as a doer of good works and miracles who rose
from the dead - such writers as Josephus, who was a Jewish Roman historian, and also historians like Tacitus and Pliny. Derek’s field of expertise was the sciences and so he tackled the area of creation from a scientific view point. He proposed that all creation is a product of intelligent design, arguing against the theory of evolution and supporting a God of Creation. He brought forth a compelling case showing us the complexity of nature being one of design and not chance. And he also explored the human genome and mutations, which are the proposed vehicle for change from one species to
another, arguing against the probability of mutations bringing about macroevolution. A book stall was available for delegates courtesy of ‘Answers in Genesis’. A buffet lunch was also provided. All in all, an informative time was had by everyone and the feedback was one of being strengthened and equipped in their own Christian faith.
As a small church we were very encouraged by what we heard and by seeing others helped in their own faith. Many attended locally from Leicestershire and further afield from Coventry and Luton.
In Autumn 2016 we are planning to hold another apologetics day conference, probably looking at comparative religions, specifically Islam and the cults, noting the differences in their various belief structures, enabling the Christian to differentiate and to be able to give a reasoned account of his/her faith.
The apologetics ‘A Reasoned Faith’ day is a free conference open to all. As a church we just seek to inform and equip others in the solid foundations of the Christian faith. Pastor Aubrey Vaughan
