BEAVERS ‘DO THEIR BEST’
TO HELP THOSE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA
Countesthorpe Beavers have had an amazing few months taking part in an incredible project helping others in our community. Due to huge demand, we opened an entirely new Beaver Colony in November, meaning even more youngsters can enjoy our exciting programme of fun activities. We now have two colonies, meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. This is the biggest our group has ever been and we are incredibly proud to have so many of our youngsters involved, especially considering that fairly recently, the village had no Beaver Colony at all. Importantly, we have also attracted a large number of new excellent adult volunteers who make it possible for us to continue our amazing programme.
To help launch our new colony and connect both groups together, we decided to be part of a national Scouting project called Million Hands. This aims to raise awareness among young people about different issues people face and by youth led actions, help make a difference and connect sections of our community. The
aim is to engage half a million youngsters, (with a million hands between them!) in community impact projects across the country by 2018.
Firstly, the Beavers had to decide which of the Million Hands issues they were going to tackle. On our Open Evening in September, both groups voted to support those living with dementia. (The other options were those living with disabilities or those without clean water.) This is clearly a very difficult issue to tackle at any age, but especially for people so young. The fact that they themselves deemed it important enough shows their impressive desire to truly make a difference. In their Promise, Beavers say that they will ‘help other people’ and they have certainly done that over the last few months, and have worked towards the World Challenge badge and the Community Impact Stage 1 badge.
After choosing the issue they were going to support, the Beavers had to plan their action.
By way of a thank you, the Active Arts committee chooses and purchases a picture from the many on display at the Art Exhibition to give to the College for their support. This year the picture was ‘Hare’ by Jo Rainer. See page 8 for more details.
NURSERY NEWS
With Easter being just around the corner, the focus at the Nursery School was seasonably on sheep for Sports Relief instead of a Steeple Chase, the children took part in a Sheeple-Chase! In preparation for this, they had been very busy colouring in and decorating Shaun the Sheep’s Timmy masks ready to wear for the event.
