APRIL 2016
THE NEW COUNTESTHORPE HERALD 15
Countesthorpe Methodist Church Notes from Sheila Howell & Angie Skerritt
NEW YEAR
Our new year at Countesthorpe Methodist began with our annual Covenant Service in January. This is an important service of rededication and commitment and was led by our own minister David.
EDUCATION SUNDAY
In February we held our Education Sunday service. The tradition of having a special service to remember all those connected with education is over a hundred years old. It has always been held on the Sunday immediately prior to the beginning of Lent. However, it has been decided that in future it would be more appropriate to hold this service in September in conjunction with the start of the new academic year. We are keen to develop links with our village schools so we take this service quite seriously. Our service this year was for All Ages. We looked back comparing teaching methods of years gone by with those of today; we remembered inspirational teachers which, of course, led us to focus on the most important teacher of all, Jesus.
MOTHERING SUNDAY
Our Mothering Sunday celebrations were also for All Ages. It was truly a family service; each Bible reading was read by three members of two of our chapel families.
During the service posies of daffodils (sometimes beautifully known as ‘Lenten Lilies’) were distributed to everyone in the congregation by two young children, Molly and Daisy.
EASTER
We hosted this year’s Easter Morning Communion and Breakfast when we welcomed friends from Cosby, Blaby and South Wigston.
A second service was at the usual time and was led by Rev Vincent Price from Oadby.
WELL DONE, CITY!
As the football season draws to a close there can’t be many people in Leicester and the county whose hearts aren’t racing! What a wonderful season our team has had.
Did you know that towards the end of the 19th century the message of football as a moral agent was spread with almost missionary zeal to all parts of England by the ever-growing number of sports- minded clergymen? In Birmingham alone about a quarter of all football clubs formed between 1844 and 1876 had church connections. Of particular interest to us as Methodists is that the Aston Villa Club was founded in 1874 by members of the Aston Villa Wesleyan Chapel Bible Class.
We wish Leicester City FC every success; whatever happens, we are proud of them!
COMING EVENTS
On 17th April we have a special service when we will centre our thoughts on those in need in Countesthorpe, in the city and further afield and on 22nd May we have a Young People’s Service which will be led by our minister David.
As usual we are busy with various events. Our first for 2016 was a Cake & Book Sale in February. These are always popular and another one is planned for July.
Our weekly Saturday Coffee Shop is still going strong; on 9th April it will make way for a Coffee Morning, at the usual time of 10am, in aid of a local Autism charity and selling home-made cakes and good bric-à-brac.
