DECEMBER 2024
HINCKLEY & DISTRICT
PARKINSON’S GROUP
It is over a year since I mentioned the availability of a new Podcast called ‘Movers and Shakers’, bringing together six [admittedly well-to-do] friends each week, all of whom have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. They chat about issues they may face and the general realities of life with that disease. This weekly production has recently been announced as the winner of the Broadcasting Press Guild’s ‘Podcast of the Year’
The chats are recorded in a pub in the Notting Hill area of London and they are generally quite positive in their approach despite having Jeremy Paxman as one of the six, often taking a more negative view, which can also be helpful to hear. Jeremy was diagnosed in 2021 and describes himself as a “gloomy” person [I could not write the actual noun he used, but it was not ‘person’!].
The podcast has now been running for nearly two years and there have been over one million downloads.
CHERRY LANE TO HOST
CHRISTMAS WREATH
WORKSHOP
Cherry Lane Glebe is hosting a Christmas wreath making workshop on 2nd and 9th December.
Cherry Lane’s horticulture experts will guide participants through the step- by-step process of creating a beautiful Christmas wreath to decorate their doors this Christmas. From choosing the perfect decorations to arranging real Nordic fir and vibrant artificial decor.
Laura Chapman, events manager said: “These wreath workshops are sure to spread Christmas cheer and help our customers add a festive touch to their homes. They are always great fun and our experts are on hand to help people create their own unique wreath.”
Tickets for the wreath making workshops cost £19.99 per adult, with crafting materials, tools and expert guidance provided.
Tickets must be booked in advance see the events page of www.cherry-lane.co.uk.
THE NEW COUNTESTHORPE HERALD 21
Podcasts can be accessed through various providers, although members of the local group can receive a monthly link to the programme through their WhatsApp group which is well worth joining. Among the regular six participants Paul Mayhew-Archer MBE, who co-wrote ‘The Vicar of Dibley’, had pioneer electrodes implanted in his brain, which he praised as steadying his movements and generally transforming his life. This is of special interest to those who are offered this relatively new treatment.
All the regular activities of the Hinckley Group continue throughout December and January. The Christmas Lunch will by now be fully booked but everyone is invited to
attend an ‘Evening of Entertainment’, organised by Rachel Yorke, on December 10th, at All Saints Church, Sheepy Magna at 7.00. It lasts about 90 minutes and includes musical contributions from Parkinson’s members but also a variety of other local entertainers. Tickets for this are just £8. Availability can be checked by ringing the number below. In January, members will be looking forward to the monthly meeting on January 12th, and experiencing their very own pantomime – “Oh no they won’t” – which this year is ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ – “oh, yes it is”.
