4 THE NEW COUNTESTHORPE HERALD
FOODBANK COUNTESTHORPE DISTRIBUTION
CENTRE
Lutterworth & Villages Foodbank are pleased to announce the launch of their second distribution centre to help the local people of Countesthorpe and its surrounding villages, on 29th September. The first session will be held on Friday 2nd October. The new centre will be run from the Methodist Chapel, Wigston Street, in Countesthorpe, who have generously donated their space, and will be staffed by volunteers from the local community. Local families who are in crisis, will be able to obtain a three day emergency supply of food. They will need to redeem a voucher that will have been given to them by one of our local referral agencies who already support them in other ways. Just under a year ago, the idea was mooted by Becky Futers to members of St. Andrew’s Church, the Parochial Church Council and the local community in Countesthorpe at an Open Meeting. The meeting attendees and PCC fully supported the notion and the wheels were put in motion to bring the new Distribution Centre, as part of the Lutterworth & Villages Foodbank to fruition. Lutterworth & Villages Foodbank opened almost two years ago. They operate under the umbrella of St. Mary’s Church in Lutterworth and they run two sessions a week from the Churchgate Centre, Lutterworth. The concept and service has gone from strength to strength. However the team knew that they needed to help more people and when Countesthorpe residents agreed, it made sense to expand the existing Foodbank to
cover Countesthorpe and its surrounding villages too.
The Countesthorpe Distribution Centre will be open each Tuesday from 12 - 2pm and Friday from 2 - 4pm, for voucher holders to drop in for a friendly chat, a hot drink and an opportunity to be signposted to other means of support that may be open to them.
The whole Lutterworth & Villages Foodbank team is made up of local volunteers who passionately want to help make a difference to the families in their community, who may be struggling financially for many different reasons. The Foodbank is part of the The Trussell Trust Network of Foodbanks and so has the support of a wider team of people too. In these times of austerity, more and more families are struggling to feed their children and pay all of the bills. By providing this service, we can help to ensure children do not go to bed or to school hungry.
If you live in Countesthorpe and would like to donate food to the Lutterworth & Villages Foodbank, there will be collecting buckets in the following places: The Rainbow Shop, St. Andrew’s Church Countesthorpe Community College and the Methodist Chapel.
In due course, these collection buckets will be rolled out to other locations too. All food donated will go to help local people covered by the Lutterworth & Villages Foodbank.
If you feel that you could offer some of your time to either of the Foodbank Distribution Centres, would be happy to look after a donation bucket or if your organisation would like to become one of our referral agencies, we would love to hear from you. Please email countesthorpe@lutterworthfoodbank.org for more information.
OCTOBER 2015
ANYONE FOR BASKET WEAVING?
The Leicester Speakers enjoyed a lively September meeting. Our attention was held by John Baron reading Edward Lear’s The Dong with a Luminous Nose. The poor Dong is yet still searching for his love!
Val Christie talked about walking the West Highland Way. Neil Barker gave an extremely interesting speech on the ancient craft of growing wicker and shared his knowledge of its production and uses. Wyn Glenn read an article concerning Himalayan balsam and used the opportunity to encourage listening to what the writer wanted to convey. Is it bad luck to quote Macbeth? Apparently it has been quite ‘dicey’ to perform in the play or be in the audience according to Margaret Barrett who told of previous tragedies connected with productions of Macbeth. Margaret held the audience with her humorous style of delivery. During the topics session Mark Glover invited people to talk about events or inventions during the Queen’s reign. One speaker, Ann Dixon extolled the virtues of microwaves to Her Majesty!
The Leicestershire Speakers welcome anyone who would like to learn the art of speaking in public. Our meetings are supportive, informative and entertaining, helping to turn nervous wrecks into confident, speakers. We meet at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of each month at the Blaby Drop in Centre. For more information ring Anne Jones on 2772295 or visit our website www.leicspeakers. co.uk. We can also provide entertainment and talks to other societies and groups.
