MAUD AND RAYMOND
Raymond was running a little late. He had only a few minutes to put his coat on and walk the few yards to catch the bus that would take him to Hinckley, where his lifelong friend, Maud, now lived. He picked up his keys, money and bus pass and the small present he had bought for her. He managed to catch the bus and spent the hour long journey re-living the years they had spent together as children. Both born in 1945 just at the end of WW11, they had lived in the same street and attended the same primary school. Raymond smiled to himself as he remembered the long, hot summer days when they would roam through the fields, and fish for tiddlers in the little brook. The winter months were spent indoors at one or the other’s house, Maud with her coloured marbles and Raymond with his train set. She would make pretty patterns with the small round marbles and Raymond would build his train set and pretend he and Maud were going all over the world in his beautiful engine.
The years passed by so quickly and soon it was time for them to leave school and start the next chapter of their lives. Maud had a job in a dress shop in the local town and Raymond worked at the local railway station as a porter. They both loved their jobs and when work was done for the day they could often be seen at the local cinema or coffee bar. Looking back to the 1960’s Raymond remembered the dances he and Maud went to and how their young lives seem to go on forever.

It was at one of the dances that Maud met Vernon. He was from London and had moved to Hinckley due to his job as a salesman. He sold ladies clothes door to door and had a real charm about him. Maud was head over heels in love with Vernon but Raymond didn’t trust him and lost no time in telling her. It was at this point that Maud and Raymond drifted apart and they were no longer seen together. Maud became more and more infatuated with Vernon and it wasn’t long before he asked her to go away with him for a weekend in London.
