Methodist Church Notes from Angie Skerritt
The ‘longest day’ has been, and gone! They say the older you get the quicker time seems to fly by - and it’s true!!
EVENTS
It doesn’t seem long since we were buying items for our Christmas Sale but with our Spring Fair arranged for 27th May we were off again for another spending spree! We look for things that are moderately priced which might appeal to our visitors. The Fair was a success, selling the items bought for the occasion plus home made cakes and jams, a Prize Every Time tombola and quality haberdashery.
Our Lasagne Lunch was also a success; thanks to the culinary skills of our in- house cooks for the day, Pat and Barry! We had a choice of beef or vegetarian lasagne, followed by a choice of 3 fruit crumbles!
The Tuesday Afternoon Group held their annual Strawberry Tea at the end of June before ‘breaking up’ for the summer. The weather was somewhat inclement so unfortunately we had to be indoors. However, with cups of tea and home made cakes plus good company, no one minded.
Action for Children Sunday was on 9th July. Gift envelopes were in the pews for donations and our Saturday Morning Coffee Shop, the day before, was also in aid of the charity.
In 1869, the Reverend Dr Thomas Bowman Stephenson saw some children living rough under the arches of Waterloo Station. Instead of walking by, he stopped to listen to their stories. Then he worked out the most practical way to help.
Dr Stephenson was a Methodist minister from the north east of England and he was passionate about social justice. So when he moved to London, he challenged the Methodist Church to take action to help children living on the streets.
His work led to the creation of the National Children’s Home (NCH). In 1994 NCH became NCH Action for Children and then just Action for
Children in 2008. The Methodist Church continues to have a very strong link with the charity and generously supports its work.
BIBLE STUDY
Our Bible Study Group is following a series of programmes on YouTube about the life and ministry of Jesus called ‘The Chosen’. The series stays true to the text of the New Testament. Each episode takes artistic licence to fill in the many blanks where the text doesn’t go into detail. The artistic licence is all feasible considering the details that are provided. The show focuses more deeply on the people who met Jesus and seeing him through their eyes and presenting Jesus in a way that was more personal.
This fresh take on the Gospels follows Jesus as he meets his disciples, heals the needy and sacrifices himself for the sake of humanity.
GOODBYE DANIEL
Sadly our minister, Daniel, will be leaving us at the end of the summer. He is based in Syston but he hasn’t let distance deter him from seeing us regularly.
We have appreciated his proactive “let’s get that done and book a date now” attitude especially in meetings! His passion and enthusiasm revealed his deep and living faith and with his sense of humour and fun he slipped seamlessly into our church family.
We will miss him, along with his interesting and colourful range of socks and we hope that his next church families appreciate him as much as we have.
